He studied mathematics, physics and astronomy in Vienna, earning a PhD in mathematics in 1898. From 1908 onward, he was full professor of mathematics at the University of Chernivtsi in Ukraine, where he also served as dean of the Faculty of Arts from 1912 to 1913.
