Original 1853 lithographed chart issued by the U.S. Coast Survey under Superintendent A. D. Bache, entitled. “Showing the Progressive Changes in Sandy Hook from 1779 to 1853 (B No. 3).”. The sheet juxtaposes two detailed plans—“Sandy Hook Head” and “Sandy Hook from the Light House to the Ocean House”—each drawn to a 1:10 000 scale and over-printed with nine historic shoreline surveys (1779, 1782, 1819, 1836, 1842, 1844, 1848, 1850, 1851, and the new 1853 trace).
