The eastern section of Dakota ca.1887 shown in Map XV ceased to exist a few years later with the creation of the 39th and 40th states (North and South Dakota). In 1861 this area (shown in the map) along with a large portion of Nebraska Territory was split off to create the organized incorporated territory of Dakota.
