The Chinese sangen, from which the shamisen is derived, was introduced to Ryukyu in the 14th century, and entered Japan in the Eiroku period (1558-70) at the end of the Muromachi period (1336-1573). The shamisen, which is played with the plectrum of the biwa, is said to have been born in Japan.
