    20 Portuguese Escudos coin. The Portuguese escudo was the currency of Portugal, replacing the real in 1911 and in use until the introduction of the Euro on January 1, 2002. This particular coin has a face value of 20 escudos. The obverse side features the coat of arms of Portugal, which includes a shield with seven castles surrounding five shields in the shape of a cross. Composition and Specifications: While older 20 escudos coins (like the 1953 commemorative coin) were made of silver, later versions, such as those issued from 1986 to 2001, were made of copper-nickel. The 1986-2001 version weighs 6.9g and has a diameter of 26.5mm.
